US Court Pauses Sanctions Against UN Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese
(MENAFN) According to reports, a US court has suspended sanctions previously imposed on UN Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese, a decision she described as a significant win for free speech and international advocacy.
Albanese announced the ruling on the US social media platform X, stating: “BREAKING! US court has suspended the US sanctions against me! As the judge says: ‘Protecting the Freedom of speech is always just the public interest’.”
Albanese, who has attracted global attention for her criticism of Israeli policies in the Gaza Strip, had been sanctioned last year by the United States over what officials described as efforts to encourage International Criminal Court (ICC) proceedings involving US and Israeli officials.
At the time, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced the measures on X, saying he was imposing sanctions due to what he called her “illegitimate and shameful efforts to prompt (ICC) action against U.S. and Israeli officials, companies, and executives.”
He further accused her of conducting a “campaign of political and economic warfare” against both countries, adding that such actions “will no longer be tolerated.”
The sanctions were introduced following a report authored by Albanese that identified several multinational corporations allegedly involved in supporting Israeli activities in Palestinian territories, including Microsoft, Alphabet, Amazon, and Palantir, through technologies and infrastructure linked to surveillance and military systems.
