Brian Thornton

Dr Brian Thornton is a Senior Lecturer in Journalism and a Senior Fellow in Knowledge Exchange. Brian is also programme leader for BA Journalism and BA Sports Journalism at the University of Winchester.
Brian worked at the BBC for over a decade before becoming an academic and he continues to work at the corporation as a senior journalist on a freelance basis.
Brian has a particular research interest in the relationships between the media, politics and the law. His research into the decline in court reporting was included in The Cairncross Review.
Brian created the only journalism-led Innocence Project (later Justice Project) in the UK and has investigated a number of miscarriage of justice cases. His work on miscarriages of justice has featured in national newspapers, BBC radio and in documentaries on the BBC and Sky.
