Israeli Coalition Moves to Dissolve Knesset Amid Conscription Crisis

(MENAFN) Israel’s ruling coalition has submitted a bill to dissolve the Knesset, according to reports, in a move linked to an escalating political dispute over military conscription for Haredi (ultra-Orthodox) communities.

According to reports citing a public broadcaster, coalition chairman Ofir Katz of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud party, along with leaders of all coalition factions, submitted “a bill to dissolve the 25th Knesset” on Wednesday evening.

The proposal reportedly states that the timing of new elections would be determined through discussions within a parliamentary committee, with the aim of regulating the process for dissolving the legislature.

The move comes amid growing political pressure over efforts to pass legislation exempting yeshiva students from military service, a key issue in the current governing majority.

According to reports, Netanyahu recently informed Haredi lawmakers that he is struggling to secure enough support to pass the exemption bill due to the coalition’s weakened parliamentary position.

In response, Haredi parties have reportedly signaled willingness to support dissolving the Knesset and advancing elections earlier than scheduled if their demands are not met.
