Switzerland Warns Patriot Missile Deal with US Could Become More Expensive

(MENAFN) Switzerland’s planned acquisition of the US-made Patriot missile defense system could become significantly more expensive and delayed, according to Swiss media reports.

Reports suggest the total cost may rise sharply from the originally approved 2.3 billion Swiss francs (about $2.9 billion), potentially even doubling.

According to reports, Switzerland’s Federal Office for Armaments has not confirmed the figures, but a spokesperson told Swiss broadcaster that anticipated additional expenses could reach “50% plus,” indicating a substantial cost increase.

Officials also warned that delivery timelines are likely to be pushed back by five to seven years.

The delays have been attributed largely to global supply pressures linked to the war in Ukraine, which has increased demand for air defense systems. Some reports also pointed to wider geopolitical tensions, including developments involving Iran, as possible contributing factors.

Following the revelations, Swiss authorities acknowledged that procurement costs are rising and waiting times are extending. In April, the Swiss Federal Council temporarily suspended payments for the system while reassessing the purchase.

According to reports, officials have also not ruled out cancelling the deal entirely in favor of European-made alternatives, with a final decision expected later this summer.
