Italian President Urges End to Ongoing War Cycle in Middle East

(MENAFN) Italian President Sergio Mattarella has called for an end to what he described as a “permanent state of war” in the Middle East, according to reports citing news agency and sources at the Quirinale Palace.

During a phone call with Israeli President Isaac Herzog, Mattarella reportedly said that attacks targeting troops serving in the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) were “unacceptable.”

He also stressed the importance of ensuring freedom of navigation in international waters, according to reports.

The remarks come amid broader regional tensions that have escalated following military strikes involving the US and Israel against Iran earlier in the year, which triggered retaliatory actions and disruptions across the region, including shipping routes in the Strait of Hormuz.

According to reports, a temporary ceasefire was later reached through mediation efforts, though negotiations have struggled to produce a lasting agreement. The truce was subsequently extended without a fixed deadline, while diplomatic exchanges between the involved parties have remained tense.
