Severe Storms Kill Eighty-Nine in India as Lightning Strike Multiple Districts

(MENAFN) At least 89 people have died in India’s northern state of Uttar Pradesh following severe weather conditions, including strong winds, heavy rainfall, and lightning, according to reports citing state officials.

Authorities said casualties were recorded across several districts on Wednesday, with the death toll rising as additional incidents were confirmed.

As stated by reports, the state’s Relief Commissioner announced via X that 89 deaths and 53 injuries were linked to “adverse weather conditions,” adding that coordination efforts are ongoing with district administrations to ensure emergency funds and support are deployed where needed.

Earlier figures had reported lower casualties, but officials later updated the toll as further information became available from affected regions.

In Bhadohi district, 15 people were initially reported dead and eight injured after storms brought down trees and power lines, according to local civil authorities. In Fatehpur district, another severe storm reportedly killed nine people and injured 16 others.

Police officials said emergency teams are continuing to monitor impacted areas and respond to ongoing risks, as stated by reports.

Additional fatalities were also recorded in Budaun and Sonbhadra districts, according to local reporting, bringing the overall toll to 89.

The severe weather also affected parts of the capital New Delhi, where rainfall disrupted flight operations at Indira Gandhi International Airport, causing temporary impacts on air traffic.
