Germany Inflation Rises as Energy Costs Drive Price Increases

(MENAFN) Germany’s inflation rate rose again in April, reaching 2.9% year-on-year, up from 2.7% in March, according to official figures released Tuesday by the federal statistics office Destatis.

Authorities said the overall increase was driven largely by rising energy prices, which have been affected by global tensions linked to the Iran war. Destatis president Ruth Brand said the latest data shows continued pressure on household costs, particularly in transport fuels.

She noted: "Consumers are particularly feeling the persistent price pressure regarding motor fuels."

Energy prices recorded a sharp annual increase of 10.1% in April 2026 compared with the same month in 2025, accelerating from a 7.2% rise in March.

Fuel costs were among the biggest contributors, with motor fuel prices jumping by 26.2% year-on-year. Heating oil saw an even steeper rise, increasing by 55.1% over the same period in Germany.

On a monthly basis, consumer prices also moved upward, increasing by 0.6% in April, reinforcing concerns about sustained inflationary pressure across the economy.
