US Evacuates Eighteen Citizens from Cruise Ship After Hantavirus Outbreak
(MENAFN) Medical officials in the US state of Nebraska confirmed Monday that 18 American citizens were safely evacuated from the cruise ship MV Hondius following a hantavirus outbreak onboard.
John Knox, principal deputy assistant secretary for the Administration for Strategic Preparedness and Response, said the evacuation was carried out overnight with coordination between multiple federal agencies and state authorities.
"As all of you are aware, last night, with the coordination of multiple federal agencies, and in partnership with state officials, HHS supported the Department of State in a safe repatriation of 18 US citizens from the MV Hondius," Knox said during a briefing.
He added that passengers will undergo initial medical evaluations over the coming days to monitor their health condition.
Officials later clarified that 16 of those evacuated were transported to Nebraska, while two others were taken to Atlanta. One of the evacuees is a dual British–US national who opted to return to the United States.
Health authorities said the group will remain under observation as part of ongoing precautionary measures linked to the outbreak.
