EU FMs to Weigh New Russia Sanctions, Mideast Issues in Brussels Meeting

(MENAFN) EU foreign ministers are set to gather in Brussels on Monday for talks covering potential new sanctions related to Russia’s war in Ukraine, along with wider foreign policy issues that include developments in the Middle East, according to reports and the EU’s foreign policy chief.

Ahead of the Foreign Affairs Council meeting, EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas criticized Russia’s actions and questioned the intent behind a proposed ceasefire.

“We saw that this ceasefire that Putin wanted was only very cynical to protect his parade, whereas they were actually attacking civilians in Ukraine."

Kallas also stated that Ukraine has followed earlier ceasefire proposals, while Russia has continued its military operations.

According to reports, the EU is preparing additional sanctions that would target individuals accused of being involved in the deportation of Ukrainian children to Russia. The issue of returning those children is also expected to be part of high-level discussions.

The meeting will also include talks with Canada’s foreign minister. Kallas described Canada as a “like-minded partner” in areas of global security and multilateral cooperation.

On Middle East-related issues, discussions are expected to focus on maritime security. This includes work under the EU naval mission Operation Aspides, with possible adjustments to operational plans aimed at strengthening demining efforts and escort operations.
