White House Warns Iran Before Start of ‘Project Freedom’ Hormuz Operation
(MENAFN) The White House reportedly issued a private warning to Iran ahead of its naval “Project Freedom” operation to escort vessels through the Strait of Hormuz, according to a media outlet report on Tuesday.
Citing a US official and a source familiar with the matter, the report said a senior Trump administration official delivered the warning on Sunday, urging Tehran not to interfere with the planned mission.
Despite this advance notice, Iran allegedly carried out a series of attacks on Monday targeting US Navy vessels, commercial shipping, and facilities in the United Arab Emirates.
In response, US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Gen. Dan Caine said the Iranian strikes remained “below the threshold of restarting major combat operations,” adding that the ceasefire was still considered to be in effect, according to reports.
They also stated that US forces remain prepared to resume operations immediately if ordered by President Donald Trump.
On the first day of the escort mission, only two US-flagged ships reportedly passed through the Strait of Hormuz, while many commercial shipping operators remained cautious despite US assurances that the route was secure.
