US Destroyers Enter Persian Gulf After Reported Clash in Strait of Hormuz
(MENAFN) Two US Navy destroyers have reportedly passed through the Strait of Hormuz and entered the Persian Gulf after repelling what was described as a coordinated Iranian attack involving missiles, drones, and small boats, according to reports.
A media outlet, citing US defense officials, said the USS Truxtun and USS Mason were supported during the transit by Apache helicopters and other military aircraft. The vessels were reportedly targeted during their passage, but neither ship sustained damage.
The report added that the attacks involved multiple waves of activity aimed at disrupting the naval movement.
In a separate development, US Central Command stated that two US-flagged commercial vessels also successfully transited the Strait of Hormuz. These movements were linked to an initiative referred to as “Project Freedom,” which US President Donald Trump announced earlier.
Iran has previously warned that US forces entering the strategic waterway could become targets, amid heightened tensions following a fragile ceasefire between the two sides.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi also commented early Tuesday, reiterating that “there is no military solution to a political crisis,” while urging against escalation in the Strait of Hormuz. He pointed to what he described as progress in ongoing diplomatic discussions and warned against actions that could derail negotiations.
The situation comes as tensions in the region remain high, with continued concerns over maritime security in one of the world’s most important shipping corridors.
