Zelenskyy Opens Door to Russia-Ukraine Peace Talks
(MENAFN) Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy signaled on Saturday that Kyiv is prepared to engage in trilateral peace negotiations in Azerbaijan "in the near future," contingent on Moscow demonstrating genuine willingness to negotiate.
Speaking at a joint press conference alongside Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev in the northern city of Gabala, Zelenskyy stressed that it is "very important" for Ukraine that Russia "finds the strength to end this unjust war."
"Of course, we highly value the role of our partners in mediating this process," he said, confirming that peace efforts featured prominently in his discussions with Aliyev.
The two leaders oversaw the signing of six bilateral agreements spanning multiple sectors, including security. Zelenskyy singled out the accords on joint defense industry development as a "very serious step" in cementing the partnership.
Aliyev confirmed that Kyiv and Baku are engaged in "serious cooperation," a commitment reaffirmed throughout the visit. The Azerbaijani president said bilateral trade — currently exceeding $500 million — and energy sector collaboration were also on the agenda.
US-brokered peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine have been held on several occasions, though the Iran war has since stalled that diplomatic momentum.
