Trump Signals Tougher Stance towards Iran

(MENAFN) According to reports, the United States is preparing to send its negotiating team to Pakistan for another round of discussions aimed at addressing tensions with Iran, while President Donald Trump has warned that a harsher approach could follow if no agreement is reached.

In a post on social media, Trump accused Iran of violating a temporary ceasefire arrangement that was expected to last until midweek, referencing alleged incidents involving vessels in the Strait of Hormuz during renewed instability around the key shipping route. He also claimed that ships linked to France and the United Kingdom were among those affected.

He stated that US representatives would be traveling to Islamabad for talks, while warning that a stricter policy would be adopted if Tehran refused to agree to what he described as a fair settlement. He further escalated his rhetoric by suggesting that, if negotiations fail, the United States could target major infrastructure inside Iran, including energy and transport networks.

According to reports, the US delegation is expected to include senior political figures involved in previous rounds of discussions. The president has also suggested he may join the talks personally if progress is made, while noting that certain officials would not attend due to security considerations.

The earlier round of negotiations held in Pakistan reportedly ended without significant breakthroughs, with disagreements continuing over Iran’s nuclear program. Washington has demanded limits on enrichment activities and the transfer of nuclear materials, proposals that Tehran has rejected as unacceptable conditions.

Iranian officials have maintained that the country’s nuclear program is a sovereign right, with its leadership arguing that external demands cannot override national interests. At the same time, Tehran has not confirmed participation in the upcoming discussions, with reports indicating it may only return to negotiations if certain conditions are revised.

Despite the uncertainty, regional sources cited in reports suggest that preparations for renewed talks are underway, pointing to increased diplomatic activity and heightened security measures in and around Islamabad.
