Iranian Official Accuses Trump of False Claims Over Hormuz

(MENAFN) Iran’s chief negotiator and parliamentary speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf has accused US President Donald Trump of making multiple inaccurate statements in a short span of time, asserting that seven claims he made within an hour were entirely false, according to reports.

The remarks came after Tehran initially announced a temporary reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. On Friday, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that the crucial waterway—responsible for roughly a quarter of global crude oil shipments—was “completely open” to commercial traffic for the duration of a ten-day ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon. This development reportedly led to a drop in oil prices of around 10%.

However, the situation shifted the following day when Iranian authorities reversed course. Officials declared that the strait had “returned to its previous state” and was once again under the “strict management and control” of Iran’s military forces.

According to Iranian statements, the renewed restrictions were a response to Washington’s decision to maintain a blockade on Iranian ports. The US had imposed these measures earlier in the week after negotiations with Tehran in Pakistan failed to produce an agreement. Iranian officials described the US actions as “piracy and maritime theft.”

In reaction to Iran’s earlier announcement about reopening the strait, Trump posted a series of messages on Truth Social on Friday. In those posts, he stated that the naval blockade would “remain in full force and effect” until a broader peace agreement is reached.

He also claimed that Iran “has agreed to never close the Strait of Hormuz again,” and insisted that the reopening of the passage “is not tied, in any way, to Lebanon.” Additionally, he suggested that most elements of a final peace deal between the parties had already been settled.
