Spain’s Sanchez Urges UN Overhaul, Stronger Global Defense of Democracy
(MENAFN) Pedro Sanchez has called for significant reform of the United Nations, arguing that the institution must be updated to reflect current global realities and strengthen its effectiveness in the 21st century, according to reports.
Speaking at a democracy-focused meeting in Barcelona, he warned that multilateral systems, international law, and democratic institutions are facing increasing pressure. He said the UN should become more efficient, transparent, inclusive, and representative in order to remain relevant.
Sanchez also suggested that leadership within the UN should include greater gender representation, stating that having a woman at the helm would improve both fairness and institutional credibility.
He emphasized that global democracies are under strain from both internal weaknesses and external threats, warning that democratic systems risk being eroded from within even as they face outside pressure.
According to his remarks, responding to these challenges requires more than resistance; it demands active efforts to strengthen democratic governance and demonstrate its continued value.
He also highlighted concerns about digital platforms and misinformation, calling for stronger regulation of social media systems. He warned that algorithms should not promote harmful content such as hate speech, polarization, or violent messaging.
While acknowledging the benefits of technological progress, he cautioned that without proper regulation, digital systems can deepen division and increase societal dependence on unregulated information flows.
