Ukrainians To Be Able To Observe Peak Of The Lyrid Meteor Shower On April 22

The best time to observe the Lyrids is in the pre-dawn hours, when the radiant of the shower is highest in the sky. As morning approaches, the radiant will rise even higher, but sunrise and the brightening sky will make the meteors harder to see.

The Lyrids are associated with Comet Thatcher, which orbits the Sun every 415.5 years. It last reached its closest point to the Sun in 1861. During an average display, the Lyrids produce about 15 to 20 meteors per hour.

It is noted that in some years the Lyrid meteor shower intensifies and can produce up to 100 meteors per hour in a so-called "outburst," but it is difficult to predict exactly when this will happen.

The Lyrid meteor shower occurs annually from April 16 to April 25.

As Ukrinform previously reported, on the evening of March 8 a meteorite flew over Germany, with fragments falling in several locations, including onto the roof of a residential building in the city of Koblenz.
