Trump Suggests Reopening UK Trade Deal on Less Favorable Terms
(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump has indicated that Washington could revisit its trade agreement with the United Kingdom and potentially renegotiate it on less favorable terms for London.
In a phone interview on Wednesday, Trump questioned the strength of what is often described as the “special relationship” between the two allies and expressed criticism of UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s policies on energy and immigration.
When asked about US-UK relations, Trump responded, “With who?” He also suggested that previous US trade terms had been overly generous and could be revised.
“We gave them a good trade deal. Better than I had to. Which can always be changed. But we gave them a trade deal that was very good because they're having a lot of problems,” he said.
Trump also sharply criticized UK immigration policy, calling it “insane,” and warned that the country was facing serious challenges.
“They’re destroying … your country is being invaded,” he said.
He further argued that both energy and immigration policies in the UK were poorly managed, adding, “The UK's energy and immigration policies are the worst of both.”
“You can't succeed, not possible,” he concluded.
