Russia-Ukraine-US Talks in Abu Dhabi Enter Second Day
(MENAFN) Trilateral negotiations between Russia, Ukraine, and the United States resumed Thursday in Abu Dhabi, marking the second day of a renewed diplomatic push to end the Moscow–Kyiv war as it approaches its fifth year.
Ukraine’s chief negotiator, Rustem Umerov, said discussions are continuing under the same framework used during the opening session, with multiple tracks running in parallel.
“We are working in the same formats as yesterday: trilateral consultations, working groups, and further coordination of positions,” Umerov said on the US social media platform Facebook.
Delegations from Moscow, Kyiv, and Washington launched the second round of talks on Wednesday in the Emirati capital, aiming to find a pathway toward resolving the prolonged armed conflict.
After the first day concluded, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy signaled that a prisoner exchange could be imminent, raising expectations of a tangible outcome from the negotiations.
“We discussed the interim results of the negotiations for today. They will continue tomorrow (Thursday). There will also be a significant step: we expect a POW (prisoners of war) exchange in the near future. Captives must be brought home,” he said in an evening video address, citing a briefing from Ukraine’s negotiating team. He offered no further specifics.
On the Russian side, presidential envoy Kirill Dmitriev, who traveled to Abu Dhabi for the talks, told reporters Thursday that negotiations are moving in a constructive direction.
He said there is “progress” and “good, positive movement” toward a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine.
Dmitriev also noted that Moscow is actively engaging with the administration of US President Donald Trump on efforts to restore economic ties between Russia and the United States alongside the peace discussions.
