Egypt Moves To Secure Strategic Fuel Reserves Amid Rising Regional Tensions
The meeting was attended by Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mahmoud Esmat, Minister of Finance Ahmed Kouchouk, and Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Karim Badawi.
Madbouly said the session aimed to evaluate the sector's preparedness amid accelerating regional developments and to review the effectiveness of precautionary measures adopted to secure domestic energy supplies. He stressed the importance of safeguarding the availability of natural gas and petroleum products to ensure uninterrupted coverage of local demand.
The prime minister underlined the“utmost importance” of maintaining safe strategic reserves of petroleum products for various uses, while also securing the required financing and budget allocations to complete ongoing energy projects. He described energy security as a core pillar of national security.
Petroleum Minister Karim Badawi outlined a series of precautionary steps implemented in coordination with relevant ministries and state institutions to guarantee supply stability and readiness for any potential escalation.
He pointed to efforts to diversify gas supply sources alongside domestic production and alternative capacities. These measures include contracting liquefied natural gas (LNG) shipments from multiple suppliers, signing long-term supply agreements with international companies, and strengthening infrastructure to receive LNG imports, including the deployment and operation of regasification vessels to enhance flexibility within the supply system.
Badawi added that the government continues to support higher domestic output by ensuring the regular settlement of dues owed to foreign partners, thereby encouraging continued exploration and production activity.
The minister also affirmed full readiness to secure the necessary gas supplies for the electricity sector, covering both residential consumption and industrial needs. At the same time, the ministry is working to increase available volumes of petroleum products and maintain safe strategic reserves of gasoline, diesel, butane and other key fuels.
The meeting comes amid mounting geopolitical tensions that have raised concerns over potential disruptions to regional energy flows, prompting Cairo to reinforce precautionary measures to preserve the stability of Egypt's energy supplies.
