Trump Says He Can Quickly Fix UN Financial Problems
(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump claimed he could quickly resolve the United Nations’ financial challenges if the organization requested his assistance.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned last week that the global body faces “imminent financial collapse” due to unpaid contributions and funding gaps from some member states.
Guterres said that unless collection of dues “drastically” improves, the UN will be unable to fully implement its 2026 budget and may run out of funds for key programs by July.
Speaking to Politico on Sunday, Trump said he was unaware of any US debts to the UN but insisted he could “solve the problem very easily” and ensure that other nations also fulfilled their obligations. “If they came to Trump and told him, I’d get everybody to pay up, just like I got NATO to pay up. All I have to do is call these countries… they would send checks within minutes,” he said.
Reports citing UN officials indicate that the US currently owes $2.2 billion to the organization’s regular budget and another $1.8 billion to its peacekeeping fund, while Russia has already paid its 2026 contribution in full. The financial strain is reportedly so severe that the UN could consider abandoning its New York headquarters, though Trump dismissed this possibility. “The UN is not leaving New York, and it’s not leaving the US, because the UN has tremendous potential,” he said.
“When I’m no longer around to settle wars, the UN can,” Trump added.
