Trump Extends Invitation to China’s Xi for U.S. Visit

(MENAFN) Washington's top envoy in Beijing disclosed Tuesday that US President Donald Trump has extended an invitation to Chinese President Xi Jinping for a visit to American territory later this year, with August or September emerging as the likely timeframe.

The diplomatic outreach runs both ways, according to US Ambassador David Perdue, who revealed to media that Xi has reciprocated by inviting Trump to China in April.

Perdue characterized the bilateral relationship as demonstrating tangible progress, pointing to concrete implementation of agreements forged during last year's presidential discussions. Key areas of advancement include fentanyl enforcement cooperation and agricultural trade involving soybean transactions.

The ambassador emphasized a groundbreaking development in law enforcement collaboration. "And most important they (China) have actually step forward in our cooperating with law enforcement from the United States," he stated, noting that agencies from both nations have joined forces against fentanyl trafficking for the first time in history.

The frequency of presidential communications signals deeper engagement ahead. "Right now, we have a level of respect and trust," Perdue added, highlighting that dialogue between Trump and Xi demonstrates a "willingness to have more interactions" spanning multiple policy domains.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent previously indicated the two leaders could convene as many as four times throughout the current year across various international platforms.

Since Trump's January inauguration last year, the presidential counterparts have maintained regular contact, culminating in their inaugural face-to-face encounter in October in Busan, South Korea—a meeting subsequently characterized as "successful."

Phone diplomacy has supplemented in-person discussions throughout a year marked by economic turbulence. The relationship experienced strain following Washington's imposition of aggressive tariffs, which Beijing matched with retaliatory measures before both powers eventually rescinded the duties.

Two major multilateral gatherings loom on the diplomatic calendar. China will welcome Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum leaders in November to Shenzhen, Guangdong province, while Trump is slated to host G20 leaders for their December summit in southern Florida.
