Xi compliments China, India ties
(MENAFN) Chinese President Xi Jinping has said that relations between China and India play a crucial role in safeguarding and advancing global peace and prosperity.
In a message marking India’s Republic Day, Xi conveyed greetings to President Droupadi Murmu and emphasized that Beijing and New Delhi should view each other as friends and partners, describing this approach as the correct path for neighboring Asian nations.
He noted that bilateral relations have steadily improved and progressed, stressing that they hold “great significance for maintaining and promoting world peace and prosperity.” Xi also characterized the relationship as the image of the “dragon and the elephant dancing together.”
Ties between the two countries deteriorated following a deadly border confrontation in 2020. However, relations began to ease after a meeting between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Xi in October 2024 on the sidelines of the BRICS summit in Russia. The two leaders met again at a regional summit in Tianjin in September 2025, where they agreed to strengthen cooperation.
Direct air links between China and India officially resumed in October 2025, and both sides have gradually relaxed visa requirements for each other’s citizens over the past year.
Earlier this month, reports indicated that India is considering removing restrictions imposed after the 2020 border incident that had limited Chinese companies from bidding on government contracts.
The warming of relations between the two Asian powers is also unfolding against the backdrop of proposed new sanctions legislation in the United States targeting Russia, with measures that could affect both China and India.
China has accused Washington of attempting to “drive a wedge between China and other countries” and of seeking to undermine its ties with India.
