Iraqi Prime Minister, Rubio hold phone call to discuss ISIS
(MENAFN) US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani held a phone call on Sunday to discuss relocating ISIS fighters to secure detention facilities in Iraq.
Rubio praised Iraq’s initiative and leadership in expediting the transfer and ensuring the terrorists are held safely following recent instability in northeastern Syria. The two leaders also discussed ongoing diplomatic efforts to ensure countries quickly repatriate their citizens in Iraq so they face justice.
In addition, they talked about Iraq’s ongoing process of forming a new government, emphasizing their shared commitment to enabling the country to serve as a stable, prosperous, and secure force in the region. Rubio highlighted that a government influenced by Iran would struggle to prioritize Iraq’s interests, avoid regional conflicts, and strengthen the US-Iraq partnership.
Earlier this week, US Central Command launched a mission to move ISIS detainees from northeastern Syria to Iraq, aiming to keep the group’s members in secure facilities. The operation began with the transfer of 150 detainees from a Hasakah detention center to a secure Iraqi location, with plans to eventually relocate up to 7,000 fighters to facilities controlled by Iraq.
