Two Senior Chinese Military Officials Under Investigation

(MENAFN) China's defense authorities announced Saturday that two high-ranking military commanders face investigation for alleged "serious violations of discipline and law," a news agency reported.

The probe targets Zhang Youxia, vice chairman of the Central Military Commission (CMC), and Liu Zhenli, who serves both as a CMC member and chief of staff of the CMC Joint Staff Department, according to a Ministry of National Defense statement cited by the news agency.

President Xi Jinping heads the Central Military Commission, the body responsible for commanding China's armed forces.

The Communist Party of China's Central Committee authorized the investigations, the ministry confirmed.

Defense officials declined to elaborate on what specific violations the two leaders allegedly committed.

The move extends Xi's sweeping anti-corruption campaign targeting military leadership. Last October, Beijing expelled two Central Military Commission members among nine officers disciplined for corruption-related charges.

Li Shangfu, China's former Defense Minister, was removed from the Communist Party in 2024 after being ousted from his position on bribery allegations.
