Explosion, Gunfire Reported In Pakistan's Mastung District

(MENAFN- Khaama Press) An explosion followed by gunfire was reported on Tuesday in Pakistan's Mastung district in the southwestern province of Balochistan, according to Pakistani media and local sources, raising fresh concerns over security in one of the country's most volatile regions.

Local sources said heavy clashes broke out after the blast between Pakistani security forces and suspected militants in the area. Officials had not yet released casualty figures or confirmed the intended target of the attack, and no group immediately claimed responsibility.

The incident comes amid a broader wave of militant violence in Balochistan, where separatist and insurgent attacks have intensified in recent years. The province has remained one of Pakistan's most unstable regions, with frequent attacks on security forces, infrastructure and civilians. Reuters reported in January that coordinated militant assaults across Balochistan killed scores of people, underlining the scale of the security challenge there.

Mastung has repeatedly been the site of bombings and armed attacks, including roadside blasts and assaults on police and paramilitary personnel. The district lies along a strategic corridor linking Quetta with southern and central Balochistan, making it a recurring flashpoint for insurgent activity. Reports in recent weeks have also pointed to sabotage attacks on energy infrastructure in and around the wider region.

Balochistan, Pakistan's largest but poorest province, has long faced a separatist insurgency led by armed groups such as the Baloch Liberation Army, which has claimed responsibility for many of the province's major attacks. Pakistani authorities have repeatedly accused militants of receiving outside support, while the Taliban have denied previous Pakistani allegations linking them to cross-border backing for such groups.

Violence in Balochistan has surged since the return of the Taliban in Afghanistan, with Pakistani officials frequently warning that militant networks are exploiting border instability. Alongside Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the province has seen some of Pakistan's deadliest recent militant incidents, keeping pressure on both security forces and local communities.
