Xi Pushes for Rapid Energy System Expansion Mideast War Hits Supplies
(MENAFN) Chinese President Xi Jinping on Monday urged faster planning and construction of a modern energy system as ongoing conflict in the Middle East affects global energy supplies.
According to reports, Xi highlighted the significance of hydropower and environmental protection, while stressing the safe and orderly expansion of nuclear energy.
"Our pioneering development of wind and solar power has now proven to be forward-thinking. At the same time, coal-fired power remains the foundation of our energy and should continue to play a supporting role," Xi said, emphasizing that China should continue along a path of clean and low-carbon development.
China currently maintains a strategic crude oil reserve of 1.3 billion barrels, sufficient for several months, and a diversified energy mix that includes nuclear, solar, and wind, while still relying on domestic coal production.
Xi added that energy security is vital to national development. "A greener, more diversified, and resilient new energy system will provide a strong guarantee for China's energy security and economic development," the reports stated.
In 2024, China sourced around 35% of its energy from Gulf countries, spending $413 billion on imports, highlighting the impact of regional disruptions on its energy supply.
