Trump Declares Himself Venezuela’s "Acting President"

(MENAFN) President Donald Trump publicly declared himself Venezuela's interim leader Sunday, posting an image identifying his new role just days after American forces detained the nation's sitting president.

Trump shared the self-designated title on Truth Social, his proprietary social media platform, labeling himself as the South American nation's acting executive as of January 2026.

American military forces executed an operation inside Venezuela on Jan. 3, apprehending President Nicolas Maduro alongside his spouse Cilia Flores. The couple faces prosecution in a New York courtroom on narcotics and arms trafficking allegations. Trump announced his administration's intention to "run" Venezuela and oversee its petroleum resources throughout a transitional phase.

Vice President Delcy Rodrigues assumed the interim presidency through an oath-taking ceremony after Maduro's detention.

Venezuela's newly installed government has maintained ongoing dialogue with Washington since the power shift. American diplomatic and security specialists traveled to Caracas to evaluate prospects for reopening the U.S. Embassy's operations.
