Denmark Ends Over Four Centuries of Public Postal Service
(MENAFN) Denmark's government-owned mail service delivered its final letter Tuesday, concluding more than four centuries of public postal operations in the Scandinavian nation, according to a broadcaster.
PostNord announced it will redirect all operational resources toward parcel logistics, responding to plummeting letter volumes driven by widespread digitization and evolving communication patterns among consumers.
Kim Pedersen, chief executive of the postal service, characterized the transition as pivotal: "Today marks a historic turning point in PostNord's history. We are ending letter distribution after centuries, but we are opening a new chapter where Danes need us most: in e-commerce, where parcels now outnumber letters."
The strategic pivot mirrors Denmark's accelerating adoption of digital infrastructure, including mobile payment systems, which have dramatically eroded demand for traditional physical correspondence.
Following PostNord's exit from letter distribution, private sector operator Dao will assume responsibility for the majority of remaining mail services.
Hans Peter Nissen, CEO of Dao, forecasts approximately 80 million letters will move through the company's network in 2026, representing a fraction of historical mail volumes handled during the public postal era.
