US Urges Allies to Reevaluate Mass Migration
(MENAFN) US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has directed American diplomats stationed throughout Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand to encourage their host nations to reconsider large-scale migration by highlighting its perceived connections to violent offenses, according to a report from a media outlet, which references a diplomatic cable.
The national conversation over immigration in the United States intensified on Wednesday after an Afghan asylum seeker allegedly shot two National Guard personnel in Washington DC. Following the incident, all immigration procedures involving Afghan citizens have been suspended indefinitely.
American envoys have been instructed to provide detailed updates on offenses attributed to migrants in their host countries and to examine how local authorities address the matter, including “policies that unduly favor migrants at the expense of local populations,” as stated in the document dated November 21.
US President Donald Trump has consistently depicted large-scale migration as a significant challenge confronting both the United States and Europe.
Since resuming office in January, Trump has restored stringent immigration measures, such as broad deportations and expanded confinement of undocumented individuals.
These actions have drawn objections from Democrats and ignited demonstrations nationwide. Trump has accused former president Joe Biden of maintaining open-border approaches that allegedly enabled violent offenders to enter the country and elude law enforcement.
Across Europe, a decade-long migration dilemma has driven governments to rethink their approaches as rising pressure affects housing availability, social support systems, and community resources.
Although several nations initially embraced asylum seekers, many have subsequently reinstated border checks and implemented stricter regulations amid increasing public concern over cultural integration, security issues, and a wave of high-profile criminal cases.
In one recent instance, a ten-year-old girl was allegedly assaulted by an asylum seeker in Ireland, sparking riots last month.
