Trump reveals readiness to sell F-35 jets to Saudi Arabia

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump announced Monday that he is inclined to authorize the sale of F-35 fighter jets to Saudi Arabia, just ahead of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s scheduled visit to the White House on Tuesday.

"I will say that we will be doing that. We’ll be selling F-35s," Trump said when questioned by reporters about whether he intends to permit the transfer of the advanced aircraft.

Trump noted last Friday that Riyadh had expressed significant enthusiasm for acquiring the jets produced by Lockheed Martin. "They wanna buy a lot of jets," he said. "They’ve asked me to look at it. They want to buy a lot of ‘35,’ but they want to buy actually more than that fighter jets."

His remarks coincided with reports from various US outlets indicating that he is moving closer to formally backing the sale.

According to general reports citing administration officials, Trump and the crown prince are expected to finalize an arrangement during the visit that would allow Saudi Arabia to purchase the F-35s, along with additional economic and defense agreements, including a deal related to liquefied natural gas.
