UN Rapporteur Discusses Palestine with French Lawmakers
(MENAFN) The UN’s special rapporteur on the occupied Palestinian territories convened a session on Monday with members of France’s parliament to discuss the ongoing situation in Palestine.
Francesca Albanese also offered detailed commentary on international law, the political environment in Europe, and the personal repercussions she has endured since releasing her reports on Palestine.
Lawmakers from the left-leaning La France Insoumise (LFI) party participated in the meeting, where discussions focused on international law, Europe’s political perspective, and the circumstances in Palestine, especially in light of tensions surrounding France’s stance on the Gaza conflict.
Prior to the start of the discussions, LFI leader Jean-Luc Mélenchon arrived and greeted Albanese warmly, expressing admiration and respect for her advocacy on Palestinian rights. MPs Mathilde Panot, Gabrielle Cathala, and Thomas Portes were also in attendance.
Albanese began the session by sharing reflections on how her perception of law has evolved over time.
“Thirty years ago, I saw the law as certainty and stability,” she remarked. “With maturity and practicing law, I felt it was a profession that serves truth and justice but also involves choices that can affect the freedom of others.”
She further explained to the lawmakers that her legal efforts, which she described as a “bridge-building role,” had ironically made her a target.
