US Unveils New Military Initiative
(MENAFN) US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth has revealed a new military campaign aimed at confronting “narcoterrorists,” as tensions with Venezuela continue to escalate and strikes on suspected cartel vessels persist.
Under US President Donald Trump, Washington’s stance toward Caracas has grown increasingly combative, marked by a surge in naval activity across the Caribbean and a renewed emphasis on accusations of drug trafficking and efforts to push for political change.
Hegseth declared, “Today, I’m announcing Operation SOUTHERN SPEAR,” in a post on X on Thursday.
He added that the mission, “Led by Joint Task Force Southern Spear and SOUTHCOM, … defends our homeland, removes narco-terrorists from our hemisphere, and secures our homeland from the drugs that are killing our people. The Western Hemisphere is America’s neighborhood – and we will protect it.”
The secretary did not clarify whether this initiative would broaden the ongoing assaults on supposed cartel boats in international Caribbean waters. Since September, US forces have eliminated no fewer than 20 vessels, resulting in an estimated 80 fatalities.
According to a news agency, which referenced anonymous US officials, the US Southern Command briefed President Donald Trump on potential targets within Venezuela in connection with Operation Southern Spear.
The outlet noted that the briefing did not indicate any movement toward a definitive decision on military action, even though Trump has accused the Venezuelan government of supporting cartel operations.
