Special Assistant to the Chief Minister for Information and Public Relations Shafiullah Jan has rejected the recent report published in The Economist, calling it“factually incorrect, based on unverified stories and political propaganda,” and a violation of journalistic principles.

Shafiullah Jan said the report“deliberately distorted” the governance style of Imran Khan and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). According to him, the article relied on sensational allegations, anonymous sources, hearsay from domestic staff, and statements of political opponents, presenting them as facts-something he described as contrary to the basic standards of independent journalism.

Condemning the inclusion of rumours related to personal and domestic matters as analysis, he said using such narratives for political character assassination amounts to“irresponsible and unserious journalism.” He said the claim regarding Bushra Bibi's interference in government affairs is“baseless,” adding that the official records of the federal cabinet, Economic Coordination Committee, National Security Committee, and parliamentary proceedings clearly contradict that narrative.

He said no government official or institution has ever lodged any complaint of such interference, yet political rivals continue to spread misleading claims to create unrest. He alleged that“the PML-N is afraid of Imran Khan, which is why new dramas are being manufactured every day.”

Shafiullah Jan added that the“mandate thieves” have already been rejected by the public and are now trying to use journalism for their own objectives, but, he insisted, they cannot diminish Imran Khan's popularity. He said that while“an innocent Bushra Bibi has been imprisoned,” attempts are simultaneously being made to malign her character.

He announced that the government will approach international forums against The Economist's article. He added that Imran Khan is the only leader who“buried dynastic politics in Pakistan,” and no report or propaganda can dent his public appeal.

In conclusion, he also criticised Reuters, saying journalism was being used for personal gain and livelihood through such articles-“a dangerous trend,” he remarked.
