UN Human Rights Council Convenes Special Session On Sudan's El Fasher

GENEVA, Nov 14 (KUNA) -- The United Nations Human Rights Council will convene a special session on Friday dedicated to the situation in El-Fasher to take a decisive position regarding the grave developments on the ground.
This special session in Geneva requested by Germany, Ireland, the Netherlands, Norway and the United Kingdom and supported by 24 member States is scheduled to consider a draft resolution providing for the establishment of an independent monitoring mechanism of the ceasefire.
The draft resolution also calls for a negotiated peaceful settlement based on an inclusive Sudanese-led and Sudanese-owned dialogue and the end to all attempts aimed at establishing parallel structures.
It calls also for the launch of a comprehensive political transition process leading to the formation of a democratically elected national civilian government following a civilian-led transitional period.
The draft condemns all forms of external interference that contribute to fueling the conflict and urges local regional and international actors to respect the unity and territorial integrity of Sudan.
It further renews the appeal of the Fact-Finding Mission to halt any material support provided to the warring parties and urges States and relevant entities to abide by the arms embargo imposed on Darfur pursuant to Security Council resolution 1556 (2004) and subsequent resolutions.
The draft emphasizes that ensuring accountability for grave violations of human rights and international humanitarian law is a foundational pillar of any sustainable settlement of the Sudanese crisis.
It calls for independent and transparent investigations into all alleged violations and for holding those responsible to account underscoring the important role of the International Criminal Court.
The draft resolution also requests the Fact-Finding Mission to conduct an urgent investigation into the violations committed in El Fasher and its surrounding areas and to identify those responsible. (end)
