Nvidia CEO Says U.S. Falling Behind in AI Race

(MENAFN) The CEO of US technology giant Nvidia has sounded the alarm that the United States is falling behind in artificial intelligence, warning that China is positioned “to win the AI race,” media reported Wednesday.

Speaking at the Financial Times’ Future of AI Summit, Jensen Huang argued that Western nations, including the US and Britain, are hampered by “cynicism” and called for “more optimism” to accelerate AI development.

Huang singled out new state-level US AI regulations, suggesting they could create “50 new regulations,” and contrasted them with Chinese energy subsidies that make it cheaper for local firms to produce domestic alternatives to Nvidia’s AI chips. “Power is free,” he noted.

The comments come amid the Trump administration’s continued ban on exports of Nvidia’s most advanced chips to China, despite a recent meeting between US President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping.

Huang previously warned that the latest US AI models only slightly surpass Chinese competitors and urged Washington to open its market to Nvidia’s chips to ensure global dependence on American technology.

Following last month’s meeting with Xi, Trump told media: “The most advanced, we will not let anybody have them other than the United States.”

Reiterating that stance, White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt said Tuesday: "As for the most advanced chips, the Blackwell chip, that's not something we're interested in selling to China at this time."
