Man hands himself in London after being mistakenly released
(MENAFN) A 35-year-old man who was accidentally released from a London prison has voluntarily returned to custody, Surrey Police confirmed on Thursday.
William Smith handed himself back three days after his unintended release from Wandsworth prison, according to police statements.
"We are cancelling our appeal to help find wanted 35-year-old William Smith who was released in error from HMP Wandsworth on Monday, 3 November. Smith handed himself into HMP Wandsworth today (6 November)," the police statement said.
Reports indicate that Smith had been sentenced to 45 months for multiple fraud offenses at Croydon Crown Court on the same day he was mistakenly freed.
Smith was one of two individuals released in error from Wandsworth, while authorities continue searching for 24-year-old sex offender Brahim Kaddour-Cherif, who was accidentally freed on October 29. The governor of HMP Wandsworth was not present at the time of Kaddour-Cherif’s release, as he was investigating a separate early release at another prison.
Speaking to media, Justice Minister Alex Davies-Jones acknowledged that prisons "won't be fixed overnight," noting that the system is currently in "crisis." Meanwhile, Shadow Justice Secretary Robert Jenrick described the situation as an "utter shambles."
