Russia accuses EU of reviving Cold War tactics amid visa restrictions
(MENAFN) Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov criticized Europe on Thursday, claiming the continent is pursuing a confrontational approach toward Russia reminiscent of Cold War-era policies, while introducing new measures. The remarks came in response to media reports suggesting the EU is considering tighter visa restrictions for Russian citizens.
Peskov highlighted that Russian diplomats already face movement limitations within the Schengen area and warned that ordinary Russians could face stricter visa rules. He said, "Unfortunately, the Europeans are diligently recalling everything related to the confrontation that took place during the Cold War, and they are just as diligently adding new sophisticated elements to this confrontation."
Addressing Western reactions to Russia’s recent military developments, including the tests of the Poseidon and Burevestnik weapons and the potential resumption of nuclear testing, Peskov dismissed the coverage as “emotional” and part of ongoing “anti-Russian hysteria.” He added, "This is despite all our clarifications, despite the clear wording of the president. This is a continuation of such a rather emotional, overly emotional reaction of the Western media."
Peskov also claimed that many journalists “do not shy away from simply distorting the meaning of what is said” and framed these narratives as part of broader militaristic and anti-Russian sentiment in Western Europe.
Regarding the upcoming US-Central Asia presidential summit, Peskov emphasized that Russia continues to cultivate strong relationships with Central Asian nations. "Putin constantly communicates with the leaders of Central Asia. Moreover, the president has very good and sincere friendly relations with all of them, which make it possible to deal with interstate affairs very effectively," he said.
