Doha, Qatar: Chairperson of the National Human Rights Committee (NHRC), H E Maryam bint Abdullah Al-Attiyah has affirmed that human rights represent a solid foundation and an ideal approach for achieving sustainable social development, based on the principles of equality, non-discrimination, accountability, and participation.

This came during the international symposium titled“Human Rights at the Heart of Social Development: Towards a Sustainable Future,” organized yesterday by the NHRC in partnership with the Arab Network for National Human Rights Institutions, on the sidelines of the ongoing Second World Summit for Social Development in Doha.

In her address, Al-Attiyah stated:“Our participation in the work of this Summit embodies the vital role played by National Human Rights Institutions in supporting the integration of human rights into social development measures, particularly in the fight against poverty, social inclusion, decent work, and full and productive employment.”

She added that“just as there is a common thread between social development and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), there is an intimate connection between them and the effective enjoyment of human rights, as each supports the other.”

The Chairperson of the NHRC stressed the importance of adopting a comprehensive, human rights-based approach across all axes of social development, expressing her appreciation for the tangible progress the Committee has observed at the national level, built upon the Qatar National Vision 2030 and the Third National Development Strategy 2024–2030.

She further stated:“We highly value the contents of the Ministry of Social Development and Family Strategy 2025–2030, which aims to establish a comprehensive and sustainable enabling approach, stemming from a deep understanding of community needs and current challenges.”

Assistant Undersecretary for Social Development Affairs at the Ministry of Social Development and Family Fahd Mohammed Al Khayarin, affirmed that Qatar considers human rights a fundamental pillar in the journey of social development, stressing that development is neither complete nor sustainable unless the human being enjoys their rights and dignity.

Assistant Undersecretary for Expatriate Labour Affairs at the Ministry of Labour Hamad Faraj Dalmouk, emphasised that the convening of this symposium embodies Qatar's firm belief that true development is only achieved when the human being is its core and its goal.

Secretary-General of the Arab Network for National Human Rights Institutions H E Sultan bin Hassan Al-Jamali, reiterated:“The convening of this historic summit in the State of Qatar, organized by the United Nations with the participation of the General Assembly and representatives of its specialized agencies, is a decisive international milestone that reflects Qatar's advanced standing in supporting issues of development and social justice.”
