Trump says he may be working on plan to denuclearize Russia, China
(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump suggested on Wednesday that he might be exploring a joint denuclearization initiative involving Russia and China.
Last week, Trump instructed the Department of War to start preparations for nuclear testing, citing that the US is “the only country that doesn’t test.”
In response, Russian Defense Minister Andrey Belousov proposed initiating preparations for full-scale nuclear tests, while President Vladimir Putin reiterated Moscow’s longstanding position of adhering to the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty if other nations comply.
At the American Business Forum in Miami, Trump said: “We redid our nuclear – we’re the number one nuclear power, which I hate to admit, because it’s so horrible.” He added, “Russia’s second. China’s a distant third, but they’ll catch us within four or five years. We’re maybe working on a plan to denuclearize, the three of us. We’ll see if that works.”
Trump also accused Russia and China of carrying out “secret” nuclear tests, though both countries have denied the claims. IAEA chief Rafael Grossi noted that there is no evidence of either country having detonated a nuclear device.
Following Trump’s comments, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Moscow is awaiting further “clarifications from the American side” on the full meaning of the US president’s remarks.
