Trump Signals Denuclearization Talks with Russia, China
(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday that he might be developing a strategy to pursue denuclearization in cooperation with Russia and China.
Last week, Trump instructed the Department of War to initiate preparations for nuclear testing, arguing that the United States is “the only country that doesn’t test.”
In reaction, Russian Defense Minister Andrey Belousov proposed beginning preparations for comprehensive nuclear tests, while President Vladimir Putin emphasized that Moscow has consistently stated it would follow the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty, provided other signatories do not breach it.
During a speech at the American Business Forum in Miami, Trump remarked: “We redid our nuclear – we’re the number one nuclear power, which I hate to admit, because it’s so horrible.”
He further commented: “Russia’s second. China’s a distant third, but they’ll catch us within four or five years. We’re maybe working on a plan to denuclearize, the three of us. We’ll see if that works.”
Trump has accused Russia and China of conducting “secret” nuclear tests, though both Moscow and Beijing have denied these claims.
IAEA director Rafael Grossi has also confirmed that the agency has found no evidence indicating that either nation has detonated a nuclear device.
