UN Official Confirms Missing Syrians May Still Be Alive

(MENAFN) A top United Nations representative announced on Friday that credible proof suggests some Syrians who vanished during the nation’s prolonged conflict might still be alive.

She emphasized the urgency of immediate measures as global initiatives intensify to trace hundreds of thousands of people who remain unaccounted for.

Karla Quintana, chairperson of the UN-created Independent Institution for Missing Persons in Syria, told a news agency during an interview at the TRT World Forum 2025 that there is “verifiable and credible information that some of the missing are alive.”

She explained that several of these individuals might be suffering as victims of sexual exploitation or human trafficking.

According to Quintana, the organization is pursuing various “lines of inquiry,” which include cases connected to disappearances blamed on the Syrian government, lost children, migrants who have gone missing, and those seized by ISIS (Daesh).

“I would like to say that 10 months ago, we would not even be able to think about going to Syria to look for the missing after the fall of the regime,” she stated. “Now we are able to enter Syria, and we are looking for hundreds of thousands of missing Syrians.”

Quintana underscored that the investigation should primarily occur within Syria, supported by international collaboration.

She urged extensive coordination among Syrian authorities, civil organizations, and United Nations agencies.

She further noted that the institute is cooperating with Syria’s newly established National Commission for the Search of the Missing, led by Rita Yalhi, and continues to maintain consistent communication with the Foreign Ministry in Damascus.
