Zohran Mamdani Confirms Openness to Talks with Trump
(MENAFN) New York City’s newly elected mayor, Zohran Mamdani, reaffirmed on Wednesday his intention to engage in dialogue with U.S. President Donald Trump regarding potential collaboration to benefit the city.
However, he cautioned that any discussion that undermines the well-being of residents would be firmly opposed.
"I continue to be interested in having a conversation with President Trump on the ways in which we can work together to serve New Yorkers, whether that be delivering on his campaign promises around cost of living or the many issues that New Yorkers have been sharing with me," Mamdani told reporters.
Mamdani noted that the White House has not yet offered its congratulations on his electoral success. Despite this, he made it clear that he would not entertain any dialogue that could negatively affect the people of New York.
"But if it is a conversation to come at the expense of those people, then I will fight that idea tooth and nail, because my job is to serve this city," he stated emphatically.
The mayor-elect also criticized Republican opposition to tackling challenges faced by the working class, asserting that recognizing the problems without implementing real remedies is insufficient.
"What scares Republicans across the country is the fact that we will actually deliver on this agenda, and the contrast is something that they cannot bear to witness," Mamdani remarked.
He further underscored his commitment to combating discrimination, saying he takes "the issue of anti-Semitism incredibly seriously," and pledged that his administration "will stand steadfast with Jewish New Yorkers in fighting the scourge of anti-Semitism across the city."
