Japan starts survey to explore building new nuclear reactor

(MENAFN) Japan has begun a survey to assess the feasibility of constructing a new nuclear power reactor, marking the first such initiative since the 2011 Fukushima disaster, according to reports.

Kansai Electric Power announced Wednesday that the survey will focus on the central town of Mihama in Fukui Prefecture, where the company’s existing Mihama nuclear plant is located. The survey aims to evaluate geological and topographical conditions in two areas, both inside and adjacent to the current plant, with assessments expected to continue until around 2030.

In addition to physical feasibility, Kansai Electric will examine the potential profitability of the project and review regulatory requirements set by Japan’s Nuclear Regulation Authority before deciding whether to proceed with construction. This survey represents Japan’s first step toward restarting nuclear development more than a decade after the Fukushima No. 1 plant meltdown in northeastern Japan.
