Russia’s Compact Nuclear Tech Promising for Civilian Use, Says Putin

(MENAFN) Russian President Vladimir Putin announced Tuesday that compact, high-efficiency nuclear technology currently deployed in the nation's military infrastructure shows significant promise for non-military applications.

During a Kremlin ceremony honoring the technology's developers with state awards, Putin outlined multiple civilian sectors where this innovation could prove transformative: small-scale nuclear power generation, energy infrastructure development across Russia's Arctic territories, and space exploration missions—including power systems for an in-development space cargo vessel and a planned lunar base.

Putin highlighted the technology's versatility, explaining that its compact dimensions, reduced mass, and enhanced safety features create opportunities for powering mineral extraction operations in isolated regions, particularly along the Arctic continental shelf. The systems could also deliver electricity and heating to distant communities while improving the operational capabilities of deep-sea research missions, he noted.

"A huge foundation for the future has been laid, and we will definitely move forward," Putin declared. "Russia does not threaten anyone. Like all other nuclear powers, Russia is developing its nuclear and strategic potential."
