Twenty-three civilians get killed from supermarket explosion in Mexico

(MENAFN) At least 23 people lost their lives on Saturday following an explosion at a supermarket in Hermosillo, located in northwestern Sonora state, Mexico, according to reports. The incident occurred after a fire broke out at a Waldo’s store in the city.

While official casualty numbers have not yet been confirmed, preliminary reports indicate that over 10 individuals were also injured in the blast. Authorities have since brought the fire under control and launched an investigation to determine the cause.

One potential explanation under consideration is a gas leak or fuel accumulation, as reported by local media. The Sonora public security authorities clarified on social media platform X that the incident was not “an attack or an event related to a violent act against civilians.”

President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed her condolences to the victims, stating, "I have been in contact with the governor of Sonora, Alfonso Durazo, to provide support as needed. I instructed the Secretary of the Interior, Rosa Icela Rodriguez, to send a support team in order to assist the families and the injured."
