Twelve people get killed in aircraft in Kenya

(MENAFN) A light aircraft carrying tourists to Kenya’s Maasai Mara National Reserve crashed early Tuesday, killing all 12 people on board, local authorities confirmed.

The Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) said the aircraft, operated by Mombasa Air Safari, departed Diani Airstrip around 8 a.m. and was scheduled to arrive at Kichwa Tembo in the Maasai Mara about an hour later. The plane went down in a remote forested area roughly 40 km from Diani.

“The aircraft had 12 persons on board. Government agencies are already on site to establish the cause of the accident and its impact,” the KCAA said in a statement.

Kwale County Commissioner Stephen Orinde told the Associated Press that all victims were foreign nationals, though their identities have not yet been confirmed. Preliminary information from Mombasa Air Safari indicates the passengers included eight Hungarians, two Germans, and a Kenyan crew member serving as the captain.

The Maasai Mara is one of the world’s most renowned safari destinations and a major attraction during the annual wildebeest migration. The reserve is served by multiple daily flights connecting Nairobi and coastal resorts such as Diani and Mombasa.

Mombasa Air Safari expressed deep sorrow over the crash and confirmed that authorities are investigating the cause.
