US, China Announce Holding Trade Discussions
(MENAFN) US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced on Wednesday that Washington and Beijing are set to engage in two days of trade negotiations this weekend in Malaysia’s capital city, Kuala Lumpur.
Bessent revealed in an interview with Fox Business Network that on Saturday and Sunday, he will confer with his Chinese counterpart, Vice Premier He Lifeng.
These discussions coincide with Malaysia hosting the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit, scheduled from Sunday through Tuesday.
In addition to Bessent, US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer will also participate in the talks. Bessent expressed optimism that both parties will be able to resolve their outstanding issues, aiming to have them "ironed out" during the weekend.
This progress would allow US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping to "enter their talks in a more positive note."
He emphasized the frequent communication between the two leaders and noted it would be unfortunate to squander their first face-to-face meeting in President Trump’s second term on addressing lingering problems rather than advancing a more productive dialogue between the US and China.
President Trump confirmed on Wednesday that he plans to meet with Xi during his forthcoming trip to Asia, which will include visits to Malaysia and Japan.
Bessent also mentioned that Trump is "scheduled to do a pull-aside" meeting with Xi at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in South Korea.
