Many nations want to buy Indo-Russian supersonic missile— Indian PM

(MENAFN) Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has revealed that several nations are expressing interest in purchasing the Indo-Russian BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles, following their demonstrated effectiveness during India’s recent conflict with Pakistan.

Speaking to naval officers aboard the aircraft carrier INS Vikrant during Diwali celebrations on Monday, Modi emphasized the growing reputation of India’s advanced weapons systems.

“Our missiles like BrahMos and Akash have proved their capability in Operation Sindoor,” he said, referring to the codename for India’s four-day military confrontation with Pakistan in May. “Now many countries in the world want to buy these missiles,” Modi added.

He further remarked that the very name “BrahMos” instills fear among some adversaries.

The BrahMos missile system is produced by BrahMos Aerospace, a joint venture between India and Russia named after the Brahmaputra and Moskva rivers. India’s Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) holds a 50.5% stake in the enterprise, while Russia’s NPO Mashinostroyenia owns 49.5%.

Modi’s remarks came shortly after India’s armed forces received the first batch of BrahMos missiles manufactured at the BrahMos Integration and Testing Facility Centre in Lucknow, located in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh.

According to official statements, the Lucknow plant—part of the UP Defense Industrial Corridor—was inaugurated virtually by Defense Minister Rajnath Singh in May. The facility began operations swiftly, producing the first set of deployable missiles within five months.

At the launch ceremony, Singh stated that the BrahMos team had already secured contracts valued at around $450 million with two foreign clients. He also projected that the Lucknow unit would generate an annual turnover of approximately $340 million by 2026.

During a recent defense trade show, Modi reiterated that India continues to “strengthen its time-tested partnership” with Russia, signaling that defense collaboration between the two countries remains a central pillar of New Delhi’s strategic ambitions.
