Food Aid to Gaza Increases But Still Far Below Target

(MENAFN) The World Food Programme (WFP) announced on Tuesday that food deliveries to Gaza have risen since the ceasefire took effect, although they remain significantly lower than the agency's target of 2,000 tons per day.

The WFP warned that restricted access through border crossings continues to obstruct efforts to deliver aid to people suffering from hunger, especially in the northern parts of Gaza.

During a press briefing in Geneva, WFP spokesperson Abeer Etefa stated that over 530 trucks have entered Gaza since the ceasefire, delivering approximately 6,700 tons of food, enough to sustain around 500,000 individuals for two weeks.

Despite this progress, she noted that the current rate of food distribution is approximately 750 tons per day—an improvement from pre-ceasefire levels but still "well below" the required 2,000 tons per day to meet the needs of Gaza's population.

In an effort to expand its reach, WFP has increased the number of active distribution points from five to 26, primarily located in southern and central Gaza.

The organization is working to open more distribution sites as the security situation allows, with a goal of eventually reaching 145 points.

Etefa mentioned that the agency had made one small delivery in the north, providing nutrition supplements and snacks to pregnant and nursing mothers, as well as malnourished children. However, access to the northern regions and Gaza City remains extremely limited.

The spokesperson also pointed out the rising demand at distribution centers, where "women, elderly people, and female-headed households" are given priority.

Additionally, WFP has continued to supply fresh bread daily through nine bakeries, with plans to expand to 30 as more wheat flour becomes available.
