Sana'a: An Israeli airstrike in August targeting Yemen's top leadership killed the chief of staff of the Yemeni Armed Forces, Major General Mohammad Abd al-Karim al-Ghamari, officials confirmed Thursday, further escalating tensions even as a fragile ceasefire holds in the Gaza Strip.

The strike also claimed the lives of Yemeni Prime Minister Ahmad al-Rahawi, several ministers, and al-Ghamari's 13-year-old son, Hussain, according to a televised statement from the Yemeni Armed Forces. The military described al-Ghamari and his companions as“steadfast mujahideen with deep experience and knowledge, martyred while carrying out duties in support of Palestine.”

The attack on August 28 targeted a routine government workshop in Sana'a, held to assess administrative and military activities over the past year.

Despite the losses, Yemeni forces emphasised that military operations have continued unabated, stating,“The barrage of rockets and drones has not faltered, and the military apparatus remains fully operational.”

Since the outbreak of Israel's offensive on Gaza in October 2023, Yemeni forces have launched numerous operations in support of the Gaza Strip, targeting sites across the occupied territories as well as Israeli maritime vessels heading toward Israeli ports.
